Stay at the Scene
Always remain at the scene. If you leave the scene of an accident, especially if people are hurt, you could be charged with hit and run.
Make Sure Everyone Is Ok and the Scene Is Safe
Check on your passengers and the passengers in the other vehicle to make sure no one needs medical attention. If the scene is unsafe, place flares or take other measures to ensure no other cars become involved.
Call the Police
The police may be needed if there are injuries or significant damage. Although they may not be needed in smaller accidents with limited damage, always call first to be sure.
Exchange Information
Collect the other driver’s name, contact details, license plate and insurance information. Collect the contact information of any witnesses.
Call a Lawyer to Assist You
As soon as possible, call your insurance company to report the damage. The police and your insurance company will determine who is at fault for the accident. Once that is done, contact a lawyer right away to make sure you are protected.
